Default Filling EGR port on cast iron head

I'd experimented with fireplace caulk and steel wool on a set of heads, it sort of worked, but not optimum. I'd heard from a guy who said Joe Mondello recommended using lead, by melting down tire weights, and using that to fill the port.
Given the melting point of lead I'd be skeptical of using that in an exhaust port. What do you fellas think?
